Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of problems as we move from adolescence into adulthood. Wisdom teeth need to come through the gum just like other teeth, but in some cases remain impacted. This can be due to a lack of space in the jaw or they can have an incorrect angulation that prevents them from coming through.
WisdomTeeth Symptoms
Wisdom teeth impaction can cause significant pain, including headaches and migraines. Pain in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles due to clenching and grinding of teeth can also be a result of impacted wisdom teeth. Pressure on the remaining teeth is also very common.
Typically, wisdom teeth that are totally unerupted rarely cause problems. Partially erupted teeth not only cause pain but may result in soft tissue infection. In both these situations the problem must be addressed.
Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery
The procedure generally involves the surgical removal of all wisdom tooth under general anaesthesia. This is the most ideal situation and allows for all four teeth to be removed at the same time. If wisdom teeth are removed under local anaesthesia then typically they are done one side at a time.
Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery Timeline
Recovery times are dependent on the individual, but normally the second and third day after surgery are the most uncomfortable, with the jaw being swollen and painful. You should allow a week to get back to feeling normal.
Generally, having your wisdom teeth removed is a safe and well-established procedure. However, as with any type of surgery, it can have some risks associated with it. Dr Green, will inform you of any risks and will also want to understand your previous medical history.
