Dentoalveolar surgery is the area of dentistry specific to the jaw, gum and other bony or soft tissues in the mouth.
Most common procedures would be difficult dental extractions or ones where previous attempts at extraction have not been successful. This is a very specialist area given that only elements of the original tooth may remain and require surgery to the area to completely remove the tooth. Some extractions are required to prevent overcrowding of teeth and as preparation for orthodontic treatment.
The exposure of impacted teeth and extraction of 3rd molars also fall under Dentoalveolar surgery.
Preprosthetic surgery may also be required to prepare the mouth for dentures. This may include the removal of excess bone (tauri), excess tissue (hyperplastic tissue), smoothing of existing bone and soft tissue surgery.
